Clam buying and care FAQs
What does WYSIWYG mean?
What you see is what you get. Each listing represents one individual clam, and the specimen in the photos is the one you receive.
Which clam should I choose?
Match the species to your lighting, available space and reef experience. Maxima and Crocea clams generally need stronger lighting and a secure rock surface. Derasa clams generally need less intense light than those species and room to grow on the sand bed. All need an established aquarium with stable water conditions. Ask us for help choosing a clam for your tank.
What lighting and flow do clams need?
Tridacna clams rely on light to support their symbiotic algae. Choose lighting appropriate to the species and placement, and acclimate gradually to a change in intensity. Provide indirect flow that does not force the mantle to fold over. Monitor calcium and alkalinity as the clam grows.
How should I acclimate my clam?
Plan the acclimation and placement before arrival. Compare shipping-water temperature and salinity with your aquarium, and avoid abrupt changes. Handle the shell gently, protect the foot and attachment threads, and never pull a clam off a surface it has attached to. Contact us before delivery for guidance suited to your tank and chosen specimen.
Can I pick up locally?
Yes. Local pickup is available at Fins Up Reef Co., 3625 W Bowles Ave, Unit 18, Littleton, CO 80123. Contact us with pickup questions.
What is your dead-on-arrival policy?
Notify Fins Up Reef Co. and provide clear photos of the affected clam within 4 hours of the carrier-recorded delivery time. Include your order number. Approved claims receive a replacement; if a replacement is unavailable, store credit is issued for the affected livestock.
